The 95 Theses of Martin Luther
by
Martin Luther
On
October 31, 1517 , Martin Luther nailed on the chapel door in
Wittenberg 95 theses would like to discuss with Catholic theologians ,
who mainly about penance , indulgences and salvation by faith versavam .
The event marks the beginning of the Protestant Reformation ,
where later came the Presbyterian Church , and represents a milestone
and a starting point for the recovery of sound doctrines .
Moved
by love and commitment to the truth clarification will be discussed at
Wittenberg , under the presidency of Rev. Father Martin Luther , which
follows. Those who can not be present to address the issue verbally with us, may do the writing .
In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ . Amen
Thesis 1st
Saying our Lord and Master Jesus Christ , Repent ....
certainly want the whole life of its believers on earth is continual
repentance .
2nd Thesis
And this expression can not and should not be interpreted as
referring to the sacrament of penance , ie , confession and satisfaction
, in charge of the office of the priests .
3rd Thesis
However do not want just understand the inner repentance ; internal repentance even when there is repentance produces all sorts of modifications of the flesh .
4th Thesis
Therefore , repentance and regret, ie the true penance , while
man endures displease himself , namely , to the entrance to this
eternal life .
5th Thesis
The pope does not want and can not dispense other penalties ,
than those imposed on his suggestion or according to the canons , which
are papal statutes .
6th Thesis
The pope can not forgive debt but to declare and confirm what has already been forgiven by God ; or else make the case that you were reserved . In these cases , if neglected , the debt would be forgiven or canceled at all .
7th Thesis
God forgives the debt to anyone without at the same time the subordinate , in sincere humility , the priest , his vicar .
Thesis 8th
Poenitendiales canons , not the ordinances prescribing the
manner in which they should confess and atone , aio Imposed only to the
living, and , according to the same ordinances , do not relate to the
dying .
9th Thesis
This is why the Holy Spirit makes us well by the pope , this
deleted all his decrees and rights the article of death and supreme
necessity
10th Thesis
Proceed desajuizadamente and evil priests who book and impose
poenitentias dying or canonical penances for purgatory to be met there .
11th Thesis
This chaff , which is to become the penance and satisfaction ,
Predicted by the canons or statutes, in penance or punishment of
purgatory was sown when the bishops they were sleeping .
12th Thesis
Once poenae canonicae or penance and satisfaction are
committed by sinners were imposed , not after, but before absolution ,
in order to prove the sincerity of repentance and regret.
13th Thesis
Moribund all satisfied with his death and are dead to the canon law , and is therefore exempt justly of its imposition.
14th Thesis
Imperfect piety or love on the part of that which lies at death's door necessarily result in great fear ; therefore, the smaller the love, the greater the fear .
15th Thesis
This fear and amazement as itself , to say nothing of other
things , just enough to cause the torment and horror of purgatory ,
because ahead of the anguish of despair .
16th Thesis
Hell , purgatory, and heaven seem to be as different as each
other complete , incomplete or almost despair despair and certainty .
17th Thesis
It seems that just as in purgatory decrease distress and dismay of souls in them must also grow and increase love .
18th Thesis
Well it seems not to have been proved , not by good deeds and
not by Scripture , that souls in purgatory are outside the possibility
of merit or growth in love .
19th Thesis
Still seems to have been proven that all the souls in
Purgatory are sure of their salvation and not be afraid for her ,
despite us having absolutely sure about this .
20th Thesis
So the Pope does not mean nor understand with the words "
plenary remission of all penalties " the whole torment is forgiven, but
the penalties for it .
21th Thesis
This is why the preachers of indulgences err in claiming to be
the man of all penalties forgiven and saved by the indulgence of the
pope.
22th Thesis
Think Indeed , the pope no penalty remission to souls in
purgatory that according to the canons of the Church should have atoned
and paid for in this life.
23 th Thesis
Truth is that if there is any plenary forgiveness of penalties
, this will only be given to the most perfect , they are very few.
24th Thesis
Thus , most of the people are deceived with promises of
pompous indistinct forgiveness , impressing the simple man with
penalties paid .
25th Thesis
Exactly the same general power which the pope has over
purgatory , any bishop or curate d' souls have in your diocese and the
parish , either in a special way and wants to with her in particular.
26th Thesis
The pope does very well in not granting the pardon to the
souls under the power of the keys ( which has not ) , but for the
assistance or in the form of intercession .
27th Thesis
Preach human vanities many claim that at the time the coin sounds when falling in the box the soul from purgatory will .
28th Thesis
It is certain that at the time the coin sounds in the box come the profit and love of money grows and increases ; help, though, or the intercession of the Church as only correspond to the will and pleasure of God .
29th Thesis
And who knows, if all the souls in purgatory wish to be released , when some say what happened with St. Severinus and Paschal .
30th Thesis
No one is sure of the sufficiency of his remorse and sorrow true ; much less can be sure of having reached full forgiveness of their sins .
31 th Thesis
As rare as there is someone who has repentance and true
regret, so rare is also one that truly reaches indulgence , and very few
who are .
32nd Thesis
Go to hell along with their masters those who judge get sure of their salvation through brief indulgence .
33th Thesis
There acautelasse that much and be careful of those who say :
The indulgence of the pope is the most sublime and precious grace or
gift of God by which man is reconciled to God .
34th Thesis
So much so that the grace of indulgence only refers to the satisfactory worth stipulated by men .
35th Thesis
Teach ungodly way many argue that those who want to deliver
souls from purgatory or acquire brief confession need no repentance and
regret.
36th Thesis
Any Christian who truly repents of his sins , feels sorry for
having sinned , have full pardon pen and debt forgiveness that which
belongs to it even without letters of indulgence .
37th Thesis
Any true Christian living or dead , is partaker of all the
blessings of Christ and the Church , the gift of God , even without
letters of indulgence .
38th Thesis
However one should not overlook the forgiveness and distribution by the pope. For, as I have stated , his pardon is a declaration of divine forgiveness .
39th Thesis
It is extremely difficult , even for the most learned
theologians , to exalt before the people while the vast wealth of
indulgence and unlike true repentance and sorrow .
40th Thesis
True repentance and sorrow seek and love the punishment : but
the profusion of indulgence free of feathers and makes them the bother ,
at least when there is opportunity.
41st Thesis
It is necessary to preach cautiously on papal indulgence for
the simple man do not judge erroneously be preferable indulgence to
other charities or better than them .
42th Thesis
Should be taught to Christians , not be thought and intention
of the pope that the acquisition of indulgence in some way can be
compared to any charity .
43th Thesis
Should teach Christians do better who gives to the poor or lends to the needy than buying indulgences .
44th Thesis
And that the charity grows love of neighbor and the man becomes more pious ; by indulgences , however, does not become better and safer than free pen .
45th Thesis
Should
teach Christians that he who sees his neighbor suffer need in spite of
that spend money on indulgences , does not buy papal indulgences . but incurs the wrath of God .
46th Thesis
Should teach Christians that if they are not plenty, with the need to stay home and no means to squander indulgences .
47th Thesis
Should teach Christians be buying indulgences free and unordered
48th Thesis
Should teach Christians that the pope must grant more pardons , needs a more earnest prayer than money .
49th Thesis
Should teach Christians , are very good while the pope's pardons man does not trust them ; but very harmful when , in consequence of them , you lose the fear of God .
50th Thesis
Should teach Christians that if the pope knew of traficância
the preachers of indulgences , rather see St. Peter be reduced to ashes
to be built with the skin, flesh and bones of his sheep .
51st Thesis
Should teach Christians that the pope , by his duty , rather
distribute money to those who are often deprived of money by the
preachers of indulgences , selling , if need be , the very cathedral of
St. Peter .
52 Thesis
One commits injustice against the Word of God when , in the
same sermon , devotes as much or more time to indulge than the preaching
of the Word .
53th Thesis
The Word of God are enemies of Christ and of the pope because of how preaching of indulgences prohibit in other churches .
54th Thesis
Expect to be saved by brief indulgence is vanity and a lie ,
even if the commissioner of indulgences , even if the Pope himself
offered his soul as collateral .
55th Thesis
The
intention of the pope can not be other than celebrating the indulgence ,
which is the least concerned , with a bell , one pomp and ceremony ,
while the Gospel , which is the essential matter be announced by one
hundred bells , hundreds of pomp and solemnities .
56th Thesis
The treasures of the Church , of which the pope takes and
distributes indulgences, are not mentioned enough nor sufficiently known
in the Church of Christ .
57th Thesis
That are not temporal goods , is evident , because many of these preachers do not distribute easily gather them before .
58th Thesis
Nor are the merits of Christ and the saints , because they are
always efficient and regardless of the pope , operate salvation of the
inner man and the cross , death, and hell for the outward man .
59th Thesis
St. Lawrence called the poor treasures of the Church , but in the sense in which the word was used in his time .
60th Thesis
We affirm with good reason, without recklessness or
carelessness , these treasures are the keys of the Church , given to her
by the worthiness of Christ .
61st Thesis
Is evident that for the pardons and absolution in certain cases the power of the pope alone is sufficient .
62nd Thesis
The true treasure of the Church is the Most Holy Gospel of the glory and grace of God .
63rd Thesis
This treasure , however, is much despised and hated , for it makes the first to be last .
64th Thesis
Meanwhile the treasure of indulgences wisely is the most appreciated , for it makes the last shall be first .
65th Thesis
Therefore Evangelicals treasures were once the networks with which caught the rich and wealthy .
66th Thesis
The treasures of indulgences , however, are the networks that are taken with the riches of men today.
67th Thesis
The indulgences which the preachers cry as the most sublime
grace so are certainly considered them because they bring big dividends .
68th Thesis
Not really similar destitution is nonetheless the most Intima grace compared with the grace of God and the piety of the cross .
69th Thesis
The bishops and priests are obliged to receive the commissioners of papal indulgences with all reverence -
70th Thesis
However have much greater duty to keep eyes and ears open for
these commissioners , instead of complying with the orders received from
the pope, not preach their own dreams .
71st Thesis
That , however, that rise against the insolent and arrogant words of the preachers of indulgences , be blessed .
72nd Thesis
Who raises his voice against the truth concerning papal indulgences is excommunicated and cursed .
73rd Thesis
The same way that the Pope uses justice to fulminate with
excommunication those who detriment of trade in indulgences proceed
cunningly .
74th Thesis
Want to achieve much more with disfavor and excommunication to
those who , under the pretext of indulgence , undermine the holy love
and truth in their ways .
75th Thesis
Consider the indulgences of the pope so powerful to the point
that someone could absolve sins , even though ( impossible thing ) had
dishonored the Mother of God , means to be insane.
78th Thesis
Quite the contrary , we affirm that the indulgence of the pope
even the slightest venial sin can undo what concerns the guilt is .
77th Thesis
To say that even St. Peter , if he were now Pope , could not
dispense with greater indulgence means blasphemes St. Peter and the pope
.
78th Thesis
Otherwise we say that the present pope , and all who followed
him , holds much greater indulgence, that is, the Gospel , the virtues
of the gift of healing, etc. . , According to what it says 1 Corinthians
12 .
79th Thesis
Claim to have the cross of indulgences adorned with the arms
of the pope and placed in the church as much value as the very cross of
Christ , is blasphemy.
80th Thesis
The bishops , priests and theologians who consent to such language in front of people will give account of this procedure .
81st Thesis
Such preaching, praising the bold and defiantly indulgence ,
makes even the learned men is difficult to protect the reverence due to
the pope from slander and the strong objections of the laity .
82nd Thesis
Here's
an example : Why does not the pope strip at once all the souls in
purgatory , moved by holy ' and charity in the face of more pressing
need of the souls that would be most just reason to do so, when in
exchange for vile money for construction cathedral of St. Peter , free innumerable souls logo for quite Negligible reason?
83rd Thesis
Furthermore
: Why continue the funeral and Masses for the repose of the year the
souls of the deceased and did not return the money received for the same
purpose or not it allows donors seek new benefits or pretendas offered
for the dead , as ' being unfair to continue to pray for the redeemed now ?
84th Thesis
Still
: What new piety of God and the pope is this that allows a wicked enemy
and redeem a pious soul and pleasing to God by love of money and not
redeem that same pious and beloved soul of his great need for free and
without love paid ?
85th Thesis
Still : Why the canons of penance , which , indeed , is very
lapsed and died from disuse , to be rescued by make money in the form of
indulgence as if they remained very much alive and in force ?
86th Thesis
Still : Why the pope , whose wealth today is more princely
than any creed , prefers not to build the Cathedral of St. Peter of his
own money rather than make money from poor believers?
87th Thesis
Still : What or who gives part of the money from the pope
indulgences to those who complete the penance is entitled to a plenary
indulgence ?
88th Thesis
After all : What greater good could receive the Church , the
Pope , as it does , a hundred times a day , every grant such waiver and
participation of the faithful indulgence free of charge .
89th Thesis
Since the pope aim the salvation of souls rather than money by
repealing brief indulgence once granted by him , to which he attributed
the same virtues ?
90th Thesis
Refute these clever arguments of the laity by force and not by
arguments of logic, means handing over the Church and the pope to the
ridicule of their enemies and to make Christians unhappy .
91st Thesis
If the indulgence was preached according to the spirit and
meaning of the pope , those fears would be easily broken , or they would
not exist .
92nd Thesis
Away, then , with all those prophets who say to Christ's people : Peace ! Peace ! and no Peace
93rd Thesis
Blessed are , however, all those prophets who say to the flock of Christ : the Cross! Cross! and no cross.
94th Thesis
Admonish is that Christians strive to follow Christ their head through the suffering , death and hell .
95th Thesis
And so expect more to enter the kingdom of heaven through many tribulations that facilitated the consolations before unfounded .
