Russia becoming a new COVID-19 hotspot

Russia (MNN) — Russia has become a new hotspot for COVID-19 cases, now having the second most confirmed infections after the United States. But many suspect Russia’s actual numbers to be much higher. Eric Mock of Slavic Gospel Association says most of the news about Russia has been filtered through the lens of Moscow and other large cities in the western part of the country. “Outside of Moscow, there were already regions where people lived in pretty difficult conditions. The healthcare is not quite as good as it is in Moscow, so people were already in the middle of a difficult life, much more difficult than we have here. What we're trying to do is help the churches help these families that are suffering even more.” You can help support these churches through SGA’s Christ Over COVID program. “We're seeing churches step up and reach out to people in a pretty profound way. Pray for these churches pray that hearts would be open to the Gospel. Above all, pray that God would be glorified in this time.” Mock encourages Christians to get involved with SGA’s daily prayer guide, available for free over email. “Every single morning, we're taking the stories and we're writing a devotional to go along with that. Our staff is putting that together trying to encourage people, to give them insight on what we're hoping that they'll pray for.”

Call to action

  • Consider supporting SGA's Christ Over COVID program to help rural Russian churches embody Christ to those in need.
  • Sign up for SGA's prayer guide to stay updated on the ministry.
  • Pray COVID-19 will recede in Russia, and that many Russians will turn to Christ.

Cyclone Amphan crashes into India and Bangladesh

Bangladesh (MNN) — Yesterday, Cyclone Amphan made landfall in West Bengal, India, near the border of Bangladesh. The storm was the strongest ever recorded in the Bay of Bengal, although it weakened slightly to the equivalent of a category 2 hurricane. Social distancing measures caused by COVID-19 have made evacuations difficult. Peter Mazumder with Asian Access says of Bangladesh, “More than one and a half million people are in the cyclone center now and they are in a safe place. But at the same time, they are a little bit scared about to go to the cyclone center because of the coronavirus situation. People should keep the distance.” Bangladesh already struggles with a surge in new COVID-19 cases and deaths, but the damage done by the storm means many people will find themselves in need of aid. Mazumder says Asian Access already has been working in the region, providing supplies to help deal with the pandemic. “We just distributed food and hygiene during the lockdown period. When they came to know about this cyclone, they immediately contacted me to get the real picture. We are very good global family.”

Call to action

  • Pray the people of India and Bangladesh will be able to stay safe during through the storm and through COVID-19.
  • Ask God to protect Asian Access workers helping people in the wake of these two catastrophes.

Double disaster threatens East India

India (MNN) -- Authorities in East India struggle to maintain social distancing while evacuating people ahead of a super cyclone. At the same time, states in East India are reporting major COVID-19 spikes. Thousands of migrant workers came home this week, carrying the coronavirus with them. Bibles For The World serves communities in northeast India, providing healthcare, education, and the Gospel. Pray for the ministry's hospital staff as they make COVID-19 preparations.

Call to action

  • Pray India’s efforts to contain the coronavirus will be successful.
  • Ask the Lord to encourage and strengthen hospital staff serving with Bibles For The World.
  • Pray for wisdom and discernment as hospital staff make COVID-19 preparations.
  • Pray Bibles For The World staff can secure food items and quickly distribute care packages to the people who need them.

Yemen, Arabian Peninsula wage war against coronavirus

Yemen (MNN) -- COVID-19 cases are rising in Yemen, where 80-percent of the population depends on humanitarian aid to survive another day. “Nathaniel”, a Christian worker focused on Yemen, says an outbreak could lead to a catastrophe. Yemen isn’t the only country struggling to contain COVID-19. Deaths and infections are skyrocketing throughout the Arabian Peninsula. Surround believers in the region with prayer; we’ll get you started at Mission-News-dot-org.

Call to action

  • Pray this difficult season would cause people of different faiths throughout the Arabian Peninsula to seek and encounter Christ.
  • Pray believers in the AP would have discernment in all situations to know the Lord’s will. Pray for courage and opportunities to share the peace they have in Jesus with those around them.

Christians in Northern Nigeria continue to suffer brutal attacks

Nigeria (MNN) — Attacks on Christians in Nigeria by militant Islamic groups have not diminished at all during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Several brutal assaults took place just this week, as Fulani herdsmen killed men, women, and children. Todd Nettleton of Voice of the Martyrs USA says since March 23“Our workers in Nigeria have identified 13 different attacks, mostly in Kaduna State and Plateau State, involving a total of 44 people being killed in these attacks. The rate of attacks has just kept right on going in spite of the coronavirus and in spite of the shelter in place orders that people are trying to follow around the world.” Attackers, mostly Fulani herdsmen, struck once every few days throughout the months of April and May, while the Nigerian government has failed to stop them. Christians around the world form one Body, Nettleton says. And when one part feels pain, the other members feel it too. "Voice of the Martyrs is privileged to be able to stand with them. And in fact, I received a picture this week of one of our workers in Nigeria with a mask on to protect against the Coronavirus, but delivering aid to some of the families who had been affected by some of these attacks.”

Call to action

  • Ask God to change the hearts of these attackers, and that violence in Nigeria would end.
  • Pray the Nigerian government would protect their own people from attack.
  • Consider supporting VOM to help Christians in Nigeria affected by this violence.
